WPA Prints from the DIA & Prints of Gerald Brockhurst

September 9 - October 9, 2016

Opening Reception: Friday, September 9 5-7PM

Curated by: Dick Goody

This exhibition features twentieth century prints from the 1920s to the 1940s. The WPA (Works Progress Administration), which was part of the New Deal, put millions of unemployed people to work in the execution public works; in this case, artists were commissioned to make prints. This collection of prints is drawn from the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. In sharp contrast, working at around the same time, Gerald Brockhurst was a society painter who is now best remembered for his extraordinarily detailed etchings, which are chiefly portraits. The Brockhurst prints are drawn from the Collection of Carl F. Barnes, Jr. and Anna M. Barnes, which is part of the Oakland University Art Collection.

stimulus/response/affect explores the varied ways artists engage the human body through sensorial, perceptual, chronological and spatial shifts, using sound and kinetic sculpture, interactive video, participatory games, augmented reality, social media and programmed software.

These dynamic artworks engage the viewer as a participant, raising questions about self, relationships, surroundings and society, and provide the unique opportunity to experience and actively (re)consider the relevance and implications of innovative interactive contemporary art.  Participating artists:
